Abstract:
CeRuSn is a unique compound in which a role of unstable cerium f-shell and its hybridization with surrounding ions can be nicely viewed either during structural phase transitions and a transition into a magnetically ordered state. Intimately connected Ce and Ru sites evolve with temperature by lattice distortions at high temperatures (close to room temperature). The resulting intermediate valence of cerium atoms is manifested in magnetic properties, especially at low temperatures where an antiferromagnetic state is formed below 2.9 K. The lecture will overview all the studies carried out up to now at our department and abroad. Results on measurements of a number of physical properties will be presented including electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, thermal expansion, specific heat, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction, some of them measured under high pressure.
