Abstract:
In past years, there has been an increasing interest in so-called multiferroic materials, displaying simultaneously spontaneous ferroelectric polarization and ferro- or antiferromagnetic ordering, because these materials may exhibit strong magnetoelectric coupling potentially promising for novel applications in non-volatile memories, magnonics and magnetic sensors. During my talk, three mechanisms of magnetoelectric coupling will be introduced. These are exchange interactions, inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and spin-dependent hybridization of the p and d orbitals. All three interactions can be responsible not only for static magnetoelectric coupling but also for a dynamics coupling, which activates magnons in THz dielectric spectra. Magnetoelectric coupling will be demonstrated in BiFeO3, CuFe1-xGaxO2, CaMn7O12 and multiferroics with Z-hexaferrite crystal structure.
