Abstract:
Cold three axis spectrometers are the ideal instrument to investigate low energy excitations in solids. The main part of the studied excitations is of magnetic origin. With a wide range of resolution and energy transfers, low background and excellent reliability, PANDA is strongly demanded for experiments on spin-waves, magnetically mediated superconductivity, heavy fermion systems and quantum criticality, low dimensional systems etc. Recent technical developments focused on improvements of operator convenience and user friendliness, including the preparation of extended options like more flexibility in resolution-to-flux-optimization. Based on a short introduction to neutron spectroscopy, the potential of the instrument for current research will be shown on selected examples related to superconductivity, magnetic ordering in low-dimensional systems, quantum criticality and frustrated magnets. In addition, complementary spectrometers at MLZ will be characterized shortly.
