Abstract:
We will report on the progress in a general upgrade of the low temperature x-ray diffractometer in the x-ray lab at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics during years 2013-2014. Beside an extensive modification of the goniometer geometry and an enhancement of the x-ray safety shielding, the difractometer was equipped by a completely new positioning system, Mythen PSD detector and a new closed-cycle cryostat with 4 K temperature limit. The diffractometer is already fully operational in the Bragg-Brentano powder diffraction mode. X-ray mirror for parallel beam experiments and a sample nanopositioning sytem (Attocube) are going to be installed. XRD measuremnts as well as the cryostat operation are fully controlled by a computer with no need of manual intervention. Overall possibilities and various options of the diffractometer will be described. Diffractometer angular resolution as well as an accuracy of the lattice parameters determination and instrument aberrations will be discussed and compered with other diffractometers in the lab. Basic description of the diffractometer control and safety precautions will be given and their enhancements planned (background suppression, control GUI, radiation monitoring etc.) will be discussed. The instrument functionality will be demonstrated on an XRD study of a bulk magnetic
system (HoCo2).
