Abstract:
Magnetoelectric multiferroics are materials with simultaneous electric and magnetic dipole order, while these orders can be coupled. Macroscopically, magnetic field can switch electric polarization or, electric field can control magnetization. Such, so-called static magnetoelectric effect, can be potentially used in magnetoelectric memories. Multiferroics can also exhibit the dynamic magnetoelectric effect which leads to unidirectional transmission of light. This effect can be used as an optical diode switchable by electric and/or magnetic field.
During my talk, I will introduce fundamentals of static and dynamic magnetoelectric effect and demonstrate the described phenomena on characteristic examples, namely chiral magnet Ba2CoGe2O7, ferrotoroidic LiCoPO4 and room-temperature multiferroic BaSrCoZnFe11AlO22. The relation of magnetoelectronics to other fields as spintronics, skyrmionics and monopolotronics will be also discussed.
