Abstract:
Results of measurements of basic physical properties on Nd2RhIn8 and Nd2IrIn8 single crystals will be presented. Emphasis will be put on magnetic properties and, mostly, on their magnetic phase diagrams which we have published recently [1, 2].
The studied compounds are members of a large structurally related compound family RmTnX3m+2n (R=rare earth, T=late transition metal, X=In or Ga) whose stucture, consisting of RX3 and TX2 building blocks, gives rise most frequently to crystals of 1:(0:)3, 1:1:5 or 2:1:8 stoichiometries. Non-cerium based compounds are often used as a tool for a systematic study of the RKKY interactions and crystal field, as well as the effect of dimensionality.
Nd2/Rh,Ir/In8 crystals have been prepared and characterized. The two compounds crystallize in the Ho2CoGa8-type tetragonal structure, space group P4/mmm (No. 123). They order antiferromagneticaly at 10.8(2) K and 12.5(2) K, respectively. When field is applied along the c-axis, two sharp metamagnetic transitions occur at 2 K, indicating an intermediate magnetic phase between the low-field AF and the (high-)field induced ferromagnetic phase which has exactly one half of the moment of the f.i. FM phase. The transitions broaden and merge at higher temperatures. The collected data have been used to construct the magnetic phase diagrams. The results will be discussed in the context of related Nd-based and other RmTnX3m+2n compounds and compared to calculations based on crystal-field theory.
