Abstract:
Seminar IV is mainly devoted to discuss the physics underlining the Topological Insulators. As a first step some properties of nanomaterials that are a consequence of the quantum confinement of electrons will be discussed in short. The second step to understand the topological insulating state is to discuss the Quantum Spin Hall effect which was theoretically predicted and experimentally realized in HgTe quantum well. This was the birth of topological insulators. I will then review and discuss the novel properties of 2 -and 3 dimension topological insulators and show how such class of materials has led to the discovery of new quantum phenomena in condensed matter physics.
