Abstract:
Magnetooptical effect and magnetooptic spectroscopy is a well-established tool to study magnetic and electronic properties of the ferromagnetic materials. Within this talk, we introduce spectroscopy of quadratic magnetooptic Kerr effect (QMOKE), an optical analogue of anisotropy magnetoresistance. Namely, we introduce symmetry of permittivity tensor being second-order in magnetization. In case of cubic crystal having point symmetry, the weighted sum of two independent complex spectra (denoted G44 and Gs) describe all elements of the permittivity tensor quadratic-in-magentization for any crystal and magnetization orientation. Based on those symmetry arguments, Gs and G44 spectra of bcc Fe and Co2MnSi Heusler compound were determined from QMOKE spectra, and compared with ab-inito calculations. Finally, we discuss microscopic origin of magnetooptic Kerr effect and its relation to the topology of the electronic structure.
