Abstract:
UIrSi3 is one of two known ternary uranium compounds (UTX3 – T-transition metal and X-Si or Ge) crystallizing in a non-centrosymmetric tetragonal BaNiSn3–type structure. Only results obtained on polycrystalline samples are reported in the literature [1]. We have successfully grown a UIrSi3 single crystal and subjected it to detailed study at temperatures 2-350 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The results show presence of antiferromagnetic ordering below 41.7 K which is destroyed by a metamagnetic transition in critical magnetic field HC (μ0HC = 7.3 T and T = 2 K) applied along the crystallographic c-axis. The metamagnetic transition exhibits an unusually asymmetric hysteresis which becomes reduced with increasing temperature and vanishes above 30 K. This behavior is suggestive of a presence of tricritical point at 30 K. In the presentation results from measurement of the magnetization, specific heat, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance and magnetostriction will be shown in detail. A complex magnetic structure is expected on the basis of the observed data.
