Abstract:
Cerium based intermetallic compounds provide an elegant platform for studying the interactions of localized f-electrons with the metallic band. In a simple picture the cerium’s localized f-electron is screened by the itinerant electrons from the metallic band, and the emerging magnetism can be viewed as a combination of localized and itinerant character. At the same time the f-electron is exposed to the crystal electric field, which splits its energy levels with different angular momentum, giving rise to electronic transitions. Our studies have shown that these transitions can interact with the lattice vibrations forming a hybridized state, which differs in character among different cerium intermetallics. I will present various results on the combined neutron and Xray diffraction and spectroscopy methods on the CeAuAl3, CePtAl3 and CePdAl3 compounds in an attempt to present a uniform picture of magnetic and electronic excitations in this class of compounds.
